Between 2000 and 2002, Pluto reddened quite a bit, and its northern polar region was shown to be much brighter in 2002 and 2003 than it was in 1994. Experts attribute the shifts to so-called seasonal changes, but they are surprised at how rapidly these shifts took place considering the fact that Pluto takes about 248 years to fully orbit the sun.
