Description:	The mental health risks associated with abortions have long been debated, but the American Psychological Association is now reporting that having one elective abortion of an unwanted pregnancy does not increase the risk of developing mental health problems such as depression. A panel appointed by the group found that the relative risk of mental health problems for adult women who have a single elective abortion is no greater than for those who carry the pregnancy to term, though it appears that women who have mental health problems before becoming pregnant are at greater risk following an abortion.
