In March 2009, Madoff pled guilty to 11 criminal counts, including securities fraud, mail fraud, and money laundering. The Honduran army overthrew and exiled President Manuel Zelaya on Sunday in Central America's first military coup since the Cold War. A military plane reportedly carried Zelaya to Costa Rica after troops stormed his residence at dawn. The coup was precipitated by Zelaya’s attempt to pass changes to the constitution that would allow the president to run for a second term in office, a move that angered the army, courts, and Congress. Zelaya took office in 2006, and his four-year presidential term is set to end in early 2010.
