Though the lawyer for Bernard Madoff, mastermind of the largest and most devastating Ponzi scheme in recent history, had requested that his client spend only 12 years behind bars for his crimes, US District Court Judge Denny Chin sentenced the 71-year-old swindler to 150 years in prison, the maximum punishment allowed. In March 2009, Madoff pled guilty to 11 criminal counts, including securities fraud, mail fraud, and money laundering. Chin called the fraud "extraordinarily evil," recognizing the "staggering toll" it took on thousands of individual investors, charitable organizations, and financial institutions. Honduran President Exiled in Coup June 30, 2009 05:00:00 The Honduran army overthrew and exiled President Manuel Zelaya on Sunday in Central America's first military coup since the Cold War. A military plane reportedly carried Zelaya to Costa Rica after troops stormed his residence at dawn. The coup was precipitated by Zelayas attempt to pass changes to the constitution that would allow the president to run for a second term in office, a move that angered the army, courts, and Congress.
